Interventions for the management of dry mouth: non‐systemic therapies

Protocol

Differences between protocol and review

In the protocol we planned to evaluate non‐systemic therapies for dry mouth. However, during the data extraction phase it became obvious that when products are applied to the oral mucosa there will always be some systemic absorption. Most trials do not measure this therefore it was decided to change the title of this review to 'Topical interventions for the management of dry mouth'. Inclusion criteria were changed to include both saliva substitutes and salivary stimulants administered in the form of sprays, gels, pastes, mouthwashes, gums or lozenges, regardless of whether these products were subsequently swallowed. Trials evaluating acupuncture or electrostimulation as a treatment for dry mouth will be included in a separate review.
