Declarations of interest

Two authors (KWJ and EV) are conducting a randomised controlled trial, funded by the The Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development, comparing braces with proprioceptive exercise for the secondary prevention of ankle sprains. This trial will be independently assessed for eligibility and risk of bias by other members of the review team.

Acknowledgements

We would specifically like to thank Dr Helen Handoll for her valuable comments about drafts of this protocol. Furthermore, we would like to thank Joanne Elliott for the design of the search strategies and Lindsey Elstub for her advice and support.

The authors would like to acknowledge the previous work by Handoll et al (Handoll 2001) as the foundation of the current review.
