SP, RO, AMG, Mike Macluskey (MM), PS, David Conway (DC), HW and JC screened retrieved papers against the inclusion criteria, appraised the quality of the papers, and extracted data; additionally, some members of The Cochrane Systematic Reviews on Oral Cancer (CSROC) Expert Panel assisted in the data extraction process (Saman Warnakulasuriya and Keith Webster).
SP obtained additional data on published studies; these were then analysed by HW, SP and AMG.
SP and AMG entered data into RevMan, and were responsible with HW and RO for data management for the review and analysis of the data.
HW, AMG and SP provided a methodological perspective.
HW was responsible for statistical analysis.
RO, MM, PS and members of The CSROC Expert Panel provided a clinical perspective.
The CSROC Expert Panel provided comments /assisted in the final review development.

El uso y la enseñanza del modelo PICO están muy extendidos en el ámbito de la atención sanitaria basada en la evidencia para formular preguntas y estrategias de búsqueda y para caracterizar estudios o metanálisis clínicos. PICO son las siglas en inglés de cuatro posibles componentes de una pregunta de investigación: paciente, población o problema; intervención; comparación; desenlace (outcome).
