Sarah Miller (SM) wrote the background and methods. SM and Lisa Maguire selected studies for inclusion in the review, extracted data from the included studies, assessed the risk of bias of the studies and entered data in Review Manager 5.1. SM described the included studies, analysed the data, drafted the discussion and identified issues for practice and research. GM mentored the first author and supervised the development of the protocol for this review, and the subsequent review. She provided methodological advice throughout, and arbitrated on issues of uncertainty and disagreement.

Differences between protocol and review

  • The second author was replaced and the third author added.

  • The Background was abbreviated.

  • We intended to exclude home‐based child development programmes that also contained a group training element, however we did not make this explicit in the original protocol.

  • An error in the original search strategy was corrected so that search terms describing 'single parents' were included within the concept of social disadvantage. More free text terms were introduced to increase the sensitivity of this facet of the search, and RCT filters were used.

  • Experts in the field were not contacted to identify other sources.

  • See Additional Table 2 for planned methods that we were unable to use due to lack of data.
