Declarations of interest

LK has been funded by the National Institutes of Health to perform a randomized trial of two glycemic control regimens in critically‐ill patients with severe soft tissue infections. Additionally, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has funded her to perform a study to develop and institute measures to increase compliance with guidelines to prevent surgical site infections, including glucose control in diabetics. Both NIH and RWJ are impartial funding agencies and will not profit from the results of the Cochrane Review. LK received payment for speaking at a symposium on closed loop control of intensive insulin therapy in critically‐ill patients, funded by the USA MRMC, NIH, NASA, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The results will not affect any these organizations financially.

Acknowledgements

The authors would like to acknowledge the peer referees for their comments to improve the protocol: Wounds Group Editors (Nicky Cullum, David Margolis, Andrea Nelson, Gill Worthy), referees (Mary Kepert, E Patchen Dellinger and Nerys Woolacott), and copy editor (Elizabeth Royle).
