Maria Ximena Rojas (MXR) and Claudia Granados (CG) co‐jointly designed the review, set the statement of objectives, and designed the criteria for considering studies for this protocol.
MX assisted in writing the background (10%), designing the search strategy (80%), and writing the methods of the review (70%).
CG was mainly responsible for writing the background (90%), and was also involved in designing the search strategy (20%) and writing the methods of the review (30%).

Declarations of interest

Claudia Granados, co‐author of this protocol, took part as a site co‐investigator in one of the trials which will be discussed in the review (Addo‐Yobo 2004 trial in Colombia). However the final analysis and the writing of the review will be done by the contact author. Dr. Granados´ inputs and comments will be discussed and agreed with her.

El uso y la enseñanza del modelo PICO están muy extendidos en el ámbito de la atención sanitaria basada en la evidencia para formular preguntas y estrategias de búsqueda y para caracterizar estudios o metanálisis clínicos. PICO son las siglas en inglés de cuatro posibles componentes de una pregunta de investigación: paciente, población o problema; intervención; comparación; desenlace (outcome).
