Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews Protocol - Intervention

Blood pressure lowering efficacy of potassium‐sparing diuretics (that block the epithelial sodium channel) for primary hypertension

This is not the most recent version

Abstract

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (Intervention). The objectives are as follows:

A systematic review of the dose‐related blood pressure lowering efficacy of ENaC blockers as either first‐line or second‐line therapy has not been previously performed. The aims of this systematic review are 1) to quantify the dose‐related blood pressure lowering efficacy of ENaC blockers as monotherapy or when added as a second drug in patients with primary hypertension; 2) to establish dose equivalencies of different drugs within the ENaC blocker family; and 3) to quantitate withdrawals due to adverse effects of an ENaC blocker, as monotherapy or when added as a second drug as compared to placebo. The information derived from this review should facilitate future reviews of head‐to‐head comparisons with other drug classes and assist clinicians in choosing optimal doses of ENaC blockers.
