Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews Protocol - Intervention

Open versus laparoscopic (assisted) ileo pouch anal anastomosis for ulcerative colitis or familial adenomatous polyposis.

Abstract

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (Intervention). The objectives are as follows:

To evaluate the beneficial and harmful effects of different types of restorative proctocolectomy for patients with UC or FAP.
To study whether laparoscopic or open IPAA are different in terms of primary (mortality, severe complications) and secondary outcomes (quality of life, operative time, hospital stay, convalescence and cosmesis). If data are present, differences in other secondary outcomes like analgesic use, postoperative pain, conversions to open IPAA and costs will be compared as well.
