This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (Intervention). The objectives are as follows:

1. To determine the analgesic effectiveness of tramadol on osteoarthritic pain
2. To determine in patients with osteoarthritis the effectiveness of tramadol on improving physical function
3. To assess how long any benefit persists
4. To determine the safety of tramadol
